SPITI VALLEY TRIP Information

Spiti Valley derives its name from the word Spiti or Piti, meaning the middle land between India and Tibet. Located in the Trans-Himalayan region of India, the valley is bordered by Tibet to the east, Ladakh to the north, Lahaul Valley to the west and southwest, Kullu to the south, and Kinnaur to the southeast. This enchanting valley is home to several ancient monasteries, picturesque villages, and a rich biodiversity reserve featuring rare and endangered flora and fauna. The entire valley boasts breathtaking natural sites, most of which remain unexplored and untouched.

Spiti Valley proudly holds several distinctive titles, including World’s Highest Village, World’s Highest Post Office, and India’s Coldest Desert Region. The local language is Bhoti, but residents do understand Hindi and English. Remember the magical word Julley, which means hello, thank you, please, and sorry – a versatile greeting that will come in handy during your visit!

Interestingly, the Geological Survey of India and the Geological Society of America consider Spiti one of the World’s most fossil-rich regions. You can discover fossils in villages like Langza and Komic. Our Trip Leader will share more fascinating facts about Spiti Valley during the journey.

IMPORTANT NOTES
  1. Pleasant Yet Unpredictable Weather: Summer in Spiti offers pleasant daytime temperatures (15-25°C) but can get chilly at night (5-10°C). The weather can be unpredictable, so carrying light woolens and a windproof jacket is advisable.

  2. Accommodation & Facilities: Unlike winter, most hotels, guesthouses, and homestays remain operational. Running water is available, but some remote areas may still use dry pit compost toilets. Homestays provide a comfortable and authentic local experience, often with traditional meals.

  3. Road Conditions & Accessibility: All major routes, including Manali-Kaza via Kunzum Pass and Shimla-Kaza, remain open. However, occasional landslides and roadblocks due to melting snow or rainfall can cause minor delays.

  4. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): Spiti’s high altitude (3,600m+) may cause breathlessness, headaches, or nausea. Consult a doctor before traveling if you have respiratory or heart conditions.

  5. Flexible Itinerary & Extra Costs: Road and weather conditions may still affect travel plans, so keep a buffer of 1-2 days. Any additional costs due to landslides, roadblocks, or unforeseen events will be extra.

  6. Respect Local Culture & Environment: Spiti is home to ancient monasteries and traditional villages—respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Carry a reusable water bottle and avoid plastic to help maintain the region’s fragile ecosystem.
